By setting up MFA, you add an extra layer of security to your Microsoft 365 account sign-in. For example, you first specify your password and, when prompted, you also type a dynamically generated verification code provided by an authenticator app or sent to your phone.
Requirements:
Once your admin enables your organization, and your account, with multi-factor authentication (MFA) you have to set up your user account to use it.
Download and Install Microsoft Authenticator App on your device ahead of time from the links bellow:
Apple Store:
Google Play Store:
Other requirements:
1. Open your browser and type into address bar https://aka.ms/mfasetup
2. Sign in to Microsoft 365 with your work or school account with your password like you normally do. After you choose Sign in, you'll be prompted for more information. Choose Next.
3. You will then arrive on the page called Additional Security Verification asking you which security method you would like to use. Select Mobile app from drop down list and Receive notification for verification. Click on Set up.
Note : If you would rather use SMS messages sent to your phone instead, select I want to set up a different method. Microsoft 365 will ask for your mobile number, then send you an SMS message containing a 6-digit code to verify your device. Tip: For a faster, and more secure, experience we recommend using an authenticator app rather than SMS verification.
4. Once this has been completed you will be displayed with the message below. QR Code is displayed which you will need to scan with the Microsoft Authenticator app downloaded in Requirements to setup your account.
5. Open Microsoft Authenticator App on your device. Select Add account or "+" icon in the top right corner of the app screen.
6. Select the option Work or school account.
7. You will be presented with a screen called Scan QR code with a square camera box in the middle of the screen.
Notes:
iPhone users may have to enable the camera in Settings in order to scan.
If you can't use your phone camera, you'll have to manually enter the 9 digit code and the URL. You may be asked to allow the app to use your phone’s camera, click OK to allow this.
8. Scan QR code using your camera square. Your account will be added automatically to the app and will display a six-digit code. Click on Next. Now wait for the Checking activation status text to finish configuring your phone.
9. Additional security verification screen will appear on the computer screen. Set up button is greyed out, hit Next to verify it worked.
9. On your phone tap Approve.
10. Switch to your PC and select country from drop down list and the phone number and click on Done.
11. Now wait for the Checking activation status text to finish configuring your phone in a case you lose access to your mobile Microsoft Authenticator app. Click on Done.
Once you complete the instructions to specify your additional verification method, the next time you sign in to Microsoft 365, you'll be prompted to provide the additional verification information or action, such as typing the verification code provided by your authenticator app or sent to you by text message. Note: Generally you'll only need the additional verification method the first time you sign into a new app or device, or after you've changed your password.
